Q: Is Liquibase destabilizing the OSS project?

A: No, we are not destabilizing OSS. It’s a core part of how we build Liquibase Secure. We remain committed to partnering with the community to shape the future of the product, and that collaboration helps keep OSS stable, reliable, and valuable for everyone.

We have been messaging this change in forums, webinars, community outreach calls, and other avenues to make sure that the community was aware and had the opportunity to provide feedback and shape the direction we’ve taken. This isn’t the end of the road for OSS. It’s just the next step in the journey.

Q: Does this mean Liquibase Secure will diverge from Liquibase Community?

A: No, Liquibase Secure is built on top of Liquibase Community, so they will stay aligned. Changes made to Community (once accepted and verified) will be included in future Secure releases, and we aim to keep both versions working together.

Q: What if my org uses both Community and Secure?

A: With the release of 5.0, we are completing the path to create two distinct distributions, one for Liquibase Community and one for Liquibase Secure. These solutions are not designed to be used interchangeably on the same changesets or environments as it introduces risk and inconsistency. There are also differences in the way the two solutions are packaged. Most notably, Secure provides an all-in-the-box experience with tested extensions and tested and packaged drivers. Liquibase Community is more of a DIY experience that does not include extensions and drivers.Customers are responsible for verifying compatibility when using both in parallel. To reduce risk and simplify your pipeline, we strongly recommend standardizing on one version per environment.
