The State of Database Change Governance 2026

AI modernization is raising the standard for infrastructure discipline. Nearly 70% of organizations ship database changes weekly or faster, and elite teams ship daily. At the same time, complexity is rising across multiple database platforms, and processes built for a slower era can’t keep up.

Only 12% of teams automate drift detection, and fewer than a third automate security and compliance checks for database change. If database change isn’t standardized and governed, variance at the foundation multiplies across the stack, showing up as model drift, non-reproducible results, and broken traceability from change to impact. The result is data quality degradation that flows directly into the AI systems depending on it.
